![]() | Lake Titicaca - December 2004 (46 images) Huddled between the Andean mountain ranges of Bolivia and Peru, Lake Titicaca is located 3, 800 meters above sea level and has an average depth of over 100 meters. As a kid I learned of Lake Titicaca as the lake at the highest altitude (aka highest navigable lake). Little did I realize that there is more to it than just a world record. The location and beauty of the lake as well as its history and people that live in the area are really the fascinating parts of it all. On a sunny day the sky over Lake Titicaca seems bluer than an average blue sky. Mix in the deep blue water and the fields of yellow-green Totora reeds and you start feeling like you are in heaven. Several ethnic groups live on the lake, and out of this the Uros who live on floating Totora islands are fascinating. Having been driven to live on the lake to escape the marauding Incas and other brute forces, the Uros have made quite a remarkable spectacle of the way they live. This is what I call a lake with personality! |
